Durham International School Nairobi is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Peter Harris as Principal. Peter will take up post in April 2025.
We welcome Peter at a very exciting stage of development for Durham, with the launch of the new Senior School and move of our Prep School to a new, purpose-built campus planned for the 2025/26 academic year. All younger year groups up to Year 1 will continue at our wonderful Thigiri campus.
Having taught for over 30 years, Peter brings more than 10 years of experience as Head at two independent schools in the UK, with pupils from ages 4 to 18; firstly as Principal of Ewell Castle School in Surrey, and currently as Head of Birkdale School in Sheffield. Like Durham School, Birkdale is a member of The Heads Conference (HMC), a professional association of heads at the world’s leading independent schools. In their most recent Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspection, both the Prep and Senior Schools at Birkdale were awarded the highest grading of ‘Excellent’ in academic achievement and personal development
Peter is a geographer and is passionate about bringing the world to life in the classroom. In addition to academic excellence, he is very keen for pupils to take advantage of opportunities outside the classroom, encouraging them to become rounded individuals equipped with valuable life skills. In addition to a PGCE, Peter holds a Masters Degree in Leadership and Management in Education from Sheffield Hallam University, as well as a National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH). Peter is married to Caroline and has three adult children who are working or in higher education in the UK.
On his appointment Peter said, “I am very excited about joining Durham International School at this pivotal time in its journey, and for leading it through the opening of a world-class campus on its amazing new site. I very much look forward to meeting members of the Durham community as we embark on this journey together, equipping our next generation with the skills to success and Confidence for Life.”
Mrs Sue Small, Headteacher of Durham Kenya, said "I would like to extend a warm, personal welcome to Peter, who will be joining the Durham International School team in the coming year. Peter will be overseeing the establishment of our new Senior School and will be instrumental in realising Durham's vision of an ‘all-through’ school. I look forward to working alongside Peter in the next stage of Durham Kenya’s growth".
