Early Years – Ages 1 to 5

The Early Years section at Durham Kenya encompasses 4 year groups: Little Durham, Playgroup, Foundation Stage 1 (FS1) and Foundation Stage 2 (FS2).

Our Early Years curriculum follows the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework which provides a pathway that ensures all children in every year group progress against age appropriate targets. The EYFS framework outlines seven Areas of Learning and Development which are divided into three prime areas and four specific areas. The three prime areas lay the foundation for children’s learning and development, while the specific areas build upon the prime areas and provide opportunities for children to develop their skills and knowledge in specific subjects.

Durham’s holistic approach to teaching and learning in the early years, builds children’s capacity to learn.  Through a balance of child-initiated and adult-led approaches, our teaching teams create a rich and stimulating environment that ignites children’s curiosity and enthusiasm to learn, and supports every child’s development.

Our Creative Curriculum

At Durham Kenya students explore and discover, create and innovate, question and problem solve, work together and individually as they focus on big ideas and their passions. Through play and project based hands-on experiences which foster social interaction and ignite creativity and imaginative thinking, students become independent, self-confident, inquisitive and enthusiastic learners.

Key Stage One

Key Stage One – Ages 5 to 7

At the end of the Early Years foundation Stage, pupils move seamlessly into Key Stage One (KS1), a two-year phase that encompasses Year 1 and Year 2, for students from 5 to 7 years old.

A more formal approach to lessons begins in Key Stage 1. At Durham, this is a time of nurturing individuality, of opening young minds to endless possibilities, and of encouraging pupils to think creatively and form their own ideas – all while having fun.

We believe that it is essential that students have a good grounding in the basics; educators concentrate on building reading, writing and mathematics foundations, whilst diving into subjects like science, history and geography.

Key Stage Two

Key Stage Two – Ages 7 to 11

Key Stage Two (KS2), is a four-year phase, encompassing Year 3 through Year 6, for students from 7 to 11 years old.

Here, our educators are purposefully focused on equipping all students with a breadth and depth of knowledge and experience. Through engaging learning opportunities, students are encouraged to become more independent and self-directed. They experiment with ideas, apply their knowledge and make decisions, while teachers nurture their self-esteem and self-confidence.

We engage students in academics, foster their strengths and challenge each individual to be the very best that they can be.

Continuous Assessment

Children’s learning and development in EYFS are documented in an online journal accessible to parents via a website or app, featuring teacher comments and photos, as well as 'next steps' for home support; parents can also share their own photos and videos. From Year 1 onwards, teachers continuously assess each child's progress to plan personalized next steps for their learning and development.
